Iberdrola and bp pulse invest 1 billion euros in charging infrastructure

Iberdrola and bp pulse are driving forward e-mobility in southern Europe with a project worth billions. As part of a strategic partnership, the two companies are planning to expand a nationwide network of fast charging stations in Spain and Portugal – a significant step towards a sustainable mobility transition.

1 billion euros for 11,700 charging points by 2030

The partners are jointly investing 1 billion euros to set up 11,700 charging points with high charging power by 2030. The aim is to accelerate climate-friendly mobility and significantly improve the everyday usability of electric vehicles. The electricity required for the charging stations will come exclusively from certified renewable energy sources – in line with Iberdrola | bp pulse’s sustainability strategy.

80 new fast-charging stations by the end of 2025

80 new charging stations will be in operation by the end of 2025. 16 of these have already been opened – including a particularly modern charging park in Oviedo (Asturias), which was officially opened at the El Caleyu filling station on January 17, 2025.

A showcase project for sustainable infrastructure

The new charging park not only offers fast charging with up to 180 kW, which enables an 80% battery charge in just 15 minutes, but also additional convenience thanks to an integrated supermarket and cafeteria. The location is strategically chosen: Directly on the A-66 (Autovía de la Plata), the site is optimally connected to the transport network and easily accessible from the city center as well as from the Teatinos and Ventanielles districts.

Political support and regional importance

The importance of this infrastructure project was underlined by the presence of numerous representatives from politics and business at the opening ceremony. Maria Belarmina Diaz Aguado, Director General for Energy and Mining, and other regional decision-makers attended the ceremony.

Julio Martin, Sales Director at Iberdrola | bp pulse, explained: “With the new location in Oviedo, we are sending a strong signal for the promotion of sustainable mobility in the north of Spain. The powerful charging infrastructure not only strengthens the region, but also better connects it with the main transport routes in the north of the peninsula”.

The fast-charging points were manufactured by Ingeteam and use High Power Charging technology from Phoenix Contact.
