V2G Alliance Austria as a pioneer for bidirectional charging

The energy transition brings new challenges and new opportunities.

A key technology for intelligently linking mobility and energy is bidirectional charging, also known as vehicle-to-grid (V2G). This involves using electric vehicles not only as consumers, but also as mobile energy storage devices that can feed electricity back into the grid.

Central network for vehicle-to-grid and smart energy systems

Founded in 2025, V2G Alliance Austria is the central network for all stakeholders involved in vehicle-to-grid (V2G) and smart energy systems in Austria. The alliance’s goal is to promote the integration of electric vehicles into the power grid and to foster innovative solutions for a sustainable energy future. The network brings together companies, research institutions, energy suppliers, technology providers, and interested parties to exchange knowledge, initiate projects, and actively shape the framework conditions for vehicle-to-grid in Austria.

What are the tasks of the V2G Alliance Austria?

The central tasks of the V2G Alliance Austria include building a strong partner network, organizing specialist events, workshops, and webinars, and promoting pilot projects and research initiatives. In addition, it facilitates a continuous exchange of best practices and current trends in order to drive innovation forward. Another important component is dialogue with politicians, authorities, and associations in order to create optimal framework conditions for vehicle-to-grid and to further develop the topic strategically.

Why is the V2G Alliance Austria necessary?

As the share of renewable energies grows, fluctuations in the power grid are also increasing. V2G offers a solution here:

Electric vehicles can not only absorb energy, but also release it again, thus functioning as mobile power storage devices. Used correctly, they can be used to balance peak loads, increase grid stability, and integrate renewable energies more efficiently.

The path to achieving this is complex. The following are lacking:

These gaps lead to uncertainty among potential users and companies along the entire value chain.

The "V2G Network" project enables holistic thinking and networked action

To address these challenges, the Austrian company powerHub launched the “V2G Network” research project in Austria. The project forms the basis of the V2G Alliance Austria and pursues the goal of interoperability between buildings, energy suppliers, and companies, enabling a smooth and efficient exchange of energy.

The V2G Network focuses on the following three objectives:

The first platform meeting of the V2G Alliance Austria on June 26, 2025, impressively demonstrated how great the interest in vehicle-to-grid (V2G) already is in the industry and how important it is to exchange concrete experiences and challenges.

First platform meeting of the V2G Alliance Austria on June 26, 2025

Around 70 experts and key stakeholders came together to exchange ideas on ongoing projects, initial implementation experiences, and future developments in the field of bidirectional charging as part of a poster exhibition.

It became clear that the potential of V2G is undisputed. The task now is to jointly address existing hurdles, such as standardization, regulation, and integration into existing energy systems.

The second platform meeting of the V2G Alliance Austria will take place on November 17, 2025.

Phoenix Contact in the V2G Network

Phoenix Contact is actively involved in the V2G Network and is committed to interoperability between sectors in order to achieve CO₂ targets in line with the vision of an “All Electric Society“. Alexander Waringer, Product Manager for Automation and Network Technology at Phoenix Contact, has been nominated as an extended member of the V2G Alliance Austria board and will play a key role in its development.

A particular advantage of the network meetings is that, in addition to the companies, the energy suppliers are also directly on site and work together on standardized processes. We expect around 100 representatives from well-known companies to attend the upcoming meeting. Phoenix Contact's goal is to actively contribute to the creation of standardized processes to ensure the efficient use of energy and establish electric vehicles as mobile energy storage devices in the energy system.

Conclusion: All players working hand in hand

Powerhub’sV2G Network” project highlights the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration and a holistic approach to vehicle-to-grid solutions. The insights gained and the network form the basis for the activities of the V2G Alliance Austria. Powerhub, the V2G Network, and the V2G Alliance Austria work closely together to create a platform for industry-specific exchange and networking among key stakeholders in Austria.
