Boyer. \u201cThe NACS charging system developed by Tesla for electric vehicles in Canada, the USA, and Mexico is supported by a reliable and robust charging infrastructure network. The rapid market penetration has prompted many players in the North American e-mobility market to adopt NACS for their own products. The Tesla standard was <\/span>opened up<\/span> to other manufacturers in 2023 and was quickly adopted by many of them for their upcoming electric cars. In the meantime, <\/span>almost all<\/span> electric car manufacturers are planning to use it in the future,\u201d reports Joe S. Boyer.\u202f<\/span><\/span>\u201cBy <\/span>opening up<\/span> the standard, other manufacturers besides Tesla can produce NACS charging cables and NACS vehicle charging interfaces, including Phoenix\u202fContact. In 2025 and 2026, the first non-Tesla electric cars for the North American market will roll off the production line with an NACS charging interface. \u201cThe North American Charging Standard (NACS) is gaining momentum and will replace the CCS type 1 charging standard in the long term. However, the J1772 (AC) and CCS type 1 (DC) charging standards will not disappear from the market <\/span>immediately<\/span>. They will remain in place for at least the next 6 to 8 years and then gradually become less important as the number of NACS vehicles increases,\u201d says Joe S. Boyer. \u201cThere are <\/span>a large number of<\/span> electric vehicles that still have CCS type 1 vehicle charging inlets, so we <\/span>have to<\/span> continue to support them with charging infrastructure. The nature of the market for utility vehicles also <\/span>indicates<\/span> that the CCS type 1 standard will remain in place for the time being. Is it possible to easily switch from type 1 to NACS?<\/h2><\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\u201cWhether electric vehicles with an existing type 1 interface can be converted to an NACS charging interface depends on <\/span>whether or not<\/span> they are designed with the same basic profile for the connection. From the point of view of the hardware, the installation dimensions can be the same as for type 1, but the cabling would have to be drastically changed,\u201d explains Joe S. Boyer.\u202f<\/span><\/span>\u201cThe software must also take all these changes into consideration, as the same pins are used for AC charging and DC charging in the NACS charging inlet. <\/span>All in all<\/span>, retrofitting the charging interface in the vehicle is too expensive and is therefore not recommended. The simpler solution for EV owners is to use an NACS-to-CCS1 adapter and\/or to use charging stations that offer both a CCS1 and an NACS charging connector.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\u201cThe changes to the charging stations are not as significant as those on the vehicle side. NACS and the J1772\/CCS1 standard have the same necessary contacts for charging, so the cables can be easily swapped if necessary. Depending on the design of the charging station, minor changes may have to be made inside <\/span>in order to<\/span> establish<\/span> the new connection. Not much is needed to physically update a charging station. Thanks to the standardized communication methods in the industry, communication with the vehicle will be no different.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

First to be launched on the market in Q2\/2025 are the 100% standard-compliant NACS AC charging cables in the CHARX connect eco family, which comply with the SAE J3400 North American automotive standard and offer maximum safety. The robust NACS charging connectors are easy to handle and enable AC charging with up to 80 A. Joe S. Boyer predicts:\u202f<\/span>\u201cIn 2025, the first non-Tesla vehicles are expected to be tested and introduced to the North American market in small quantities. In the following year, further vehicles are expected on a large scale, which will benefit not only Tesla but also the manufacturers of charging infrastructure.\u201d<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Certified in accordance with UL 2251, the NACS AC charging cables from Phoenix\u202fContact have passed all UL safety tests. For electrical safety, the power contacts of the NACS charging connector are equipped with touch protection that meets IP2XB degree of protection in accordance with UL requirements. Fully molded plastic caps on the protruding pins of the power contacts ensure that this is permanently the case. As Boyer explains:\u202f<\/span>\u201cThis prevents electrical accidents caused by exposed power contacts and also increases the reliability of NACS charging stations.\u201d<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The optional integrated temperature sensors protect against overheating, while the complete longitudinal water tightness of the charging connector protects the live parts of the electrical system. These properties help to ensure a long service life for the NACS charging cable. In line with the installation requirements of NACS charging stations, AC charging connectors are available with a 25-foot-long, unassembled cable or can be individually assembled according to customer requirements. Customizations can include flexible stripping lengths and step-by-step cutting, crimping, or sealing using ultrasonic welding technology.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
